What is a breed standard?

The breed standard is the officially approved description by the FCI and/or the CPC, of the morphological characteristics and parameters of each dog breed.

The standard also encompasses all of the morphological aspects of each breed from the head to tail, including size, weight and the description of accepted colours, that are defined in detail. The standard also contains the faults corresponding to the breed.

The individual assessment of each specimen is always made taking into account the breed parameters contained in the standard, and the individual quality of a specimen is determined according to the criteria stipulated in the official breed standard.
